Everyone has a favorite color, and colors you like to go with them.
But what about colors to create depth and shading? Will you simply use black?
 
Larger art medium sets have a nice variety of colors, Hues (pure color), Tints (Colors+White) Tones (Color+Gray), and Shades (Color+Black). Smaller sets don't have as many colors. Testing different colors together can help you make up for the lack of available colors.
 
Color Combinations sheets are for testing or practicing different colors together, and to keep track of the colors used. Testing how they look together, but also testing your medium (the material in which the art is made). Testing what colors are needed for a specific project. Testing how your pencils/markers/paint blend together.
